Billy Gernertt, gunner’s mate for the tall ship Lynx, yells, “Live free or die!” before firing a dummy charge from its cannon toward the Hawaiian Chieftan during a mock battle on Commencement Bay on July 4, 2008. The top-sail schooner was built to replicate a privateer or naval schooner from the War of 1812. The original Lynx was among the first ships to defend American freedom.
