Puyallup, WA: Relaxed Country Life Meets Modern Amenities

Live comfortably, close to major cities, with a gorgeous view of Mt. Rainier, and plenty of local activities all year long. In a nutshell, that’s Puyallup! But the appeal of this town goes beyond pretty scenery and fun fairs.

When we ventured to Puyallup for our latest City Skinny edition, it was a gorgeous day and the Washington State Fair was in full swing. The parks were full and the streets were busy with folks grabbing a quick bite or enjoying a stroll through the Antique District.

Situated east of Tacoma and south of Seattle, Puyallup may seem a world away. But with an abundance of festivals happening all year long, it’s a bustling, generous community (the town’s name literally means, “generous people”).

Do The Puyallup
Every September, the Washington State Fair isn’t just the biggest event in the state: It’s continually ranked as one of the largest fairs in the world with over 1 million guests. It spreads across nearly 170 acres, with rides, concerts (including major and contemporary artists, like Carrie Underwood and Pitbull), a rodeo, animals, arts and crafts, and plenty of scrumptious food (over 165 booths).

Small Town Appeal
Festivals occur throughout the year, but Puyallup is still a small community that maintains its historic downtown charm. Many of the buildings are original 1800’s architecture, and a plethora of antique stores, like Victoria Sells Antiques, line the north-south street of Meridian.
